Expecting a bundle of joy soon? You’re probably feeling a lot of anticipation and excitement, along with some changes in your skin’s condition. Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy can cause a variety of skin issues, including acne, dryness, and sensitivity. To keep your skin healthy and radiant throughout your pregnancy (and keep baby safe), you may need to make some adjustments to your skincare routine. Here are our skin concierge’s top tips.

5 Skin Tips for Expecting Moms

1. Choose Pregnancy-Safe Skincare Products

First and foremost, it’s essential to check product labels and use pregnancy-safe topicals. Common ingredients including retinoids and essential oils should be avoided. Always look for pregnancy-safe product labels and consult with your dermatologist or OB-GYN before using a new topical.

At Revea, we’re on a mission to make skincare work for you. Our AI-powered mobile face scanner takes your current lifestyle factors and skin condition into account to create high-performing, precision serums.

All Revea custom formulations are pregnancy and breastfeeding-safe and free of fragrance, colorants, silicones, phthalates, and parabens. Additionally, full toxicology and safety dossiers are available upon request for all Revea raw materials to ensure your safety with no irritation or other skin reactions.

2. Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

You may notice your skin becoming drier, especially as your pregnancy progresses. We, therefore, recommend opting for a richer, thicker moisturizer than you would normally use and reapplying it throughout the day. An ultra-hydrating ingredient to look for includes glycerin, a humectant that helps your skin retain its moisture level. All our moisturizers are formulated with glycerin.

3. Sunscreen is a Must

Even if you’re not spending time outdoors, it’s imperative to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF between 30-50. Apply generously to exposed areas and reapply throughout the day to protect your skin from the harmful effects of UV rays.

There are two categories of sunscreens: physical and chemical. Physical sunscreens protect the skin by sitting on the surface and reflecting UV rays. They block UVA and UVB rays from penetrating the skin and are formulated with zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. Some of our favorites include:

  • EltaMD UV Elements Broad-Spectrum SPF 44

  • Biossance Squalene + Zinc Sheer Mineral Sunscreen

Chemical sunscreens work like a sponge, absorbing UV rays, and reducing the damage caused. Chemical sunscreens degrade in sunlight and require more frequent reapplication. They are often formulated with the following ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, or octinoxate. A couple of our favorites are:

  • Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen SPF 40

  • Tula Protect + Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel Broad Spectrum SPF 30

4. Keep it Simple

As an expecting mom, you may not have as much time or energy to devote to your skincare routine as you once did. We recommend pairing down your routine with tried and true essentials. A gentle cleanser, targeted serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen are all you really need to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

5. Don’t Hesitate to Ask

It’s normal to experience significant changes in your skin when expecting. Don’t hesitate to reach out with your questions and concerns! Our skin concierge, and your dermatologist or OB-GYN can offer recommendations for pregnancy-safe skincare products and treatments to address your specific skin concerns. Adjusting your skincare routine as an expecting mom may take some trial and error, but with a little effort and patience, you can keep your skin radiant and healthy throughout your pregnancy. Remember, the most important thing is to take care of yourself and your growing baby, so keep things simple and enjoy this special time in your life!
