At Revea, we measure over 40 parameters to track your skin’s health including your skin texture & tone, milieu, energy supply, dermal fibers, and hydration levels to create your custom formulation.  One of the most important, but often overlooked building blocks of your skin’s health is hydration.  Let’s dive into what impacts your Revea hydration score and how to improve it.

What Does Having Hydrated Skin Mean?

Hydration is a measure of your skin’s ability to properly regulate moisture levels. Water fundamentally gives your skin its healthy glow and is critical to long-term skin health.  The Revea hydration parameter also accounts for your skin’s barrier function, one of the most important physiologic skin structures that help fight off infection and transepidermal water loss.  With a damaged skin barrier, the stratum corneum, or top, waxy layer of skin that holds onto water and prevents harmful toxins from entering your tissue is dysregulated. Improving and protecting your barrier is essential to achieve radiant, glowing skin.

Why Is Skin Hydration So Important?

Proper skin hydration is essential for maintaining optimal skin health.  It helps regulate moisture levels, promote healthy skin barrier functioning, and supports the skin’s ability to prevent trans-epidermal water loss, all while serving as a defense against external damage.

What Impacts Your Skin’s Hydration Levels?

Harsh cleansers, stripping toners, and other exfoliating products can strip your skin of its natural oils, damaging your skin barrier. Not drinking sufficient amounts of water and changes in the weather can also impact your hydration score.

How To Improve Your Skin’s Hydration Levels

We recommend following these four simple practices consistently to see an improvement in your hydration score:

  1. Opt for a Gentle Cleanser: Using harsh facial cleansers can strip your skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and dehydration. Instead, we recommend using a daily cleanser that’s gentle and won’t disrupt your delicate skin barrier.

  2. Moisturize Regularly: A high-quality facial moisturizer can help lock in moisture and prevent water loss.  Revea’s Skin Restoring Moisturizer delivers essential hydration to comfort and restore your skin barrier. Plus, you can choose your preferred formula from 4 different textures: an aqueous gel with a mattifying effect, a gel cream, a unique water-in-oil, and a rich cream.

  3. Drink Plenty of Water: Staying hydrated is crucial for skin hydration. Aim to drink at least 8-10, eight-ounce glasses of water per day (the 8:8 rule).

  4. Use a Humidifier: Changes in environmental humidity disrupt the skin’s barrier, causing increased sensitivity, dryness, and sensitivity. Investing in a humidifier can help increase indoor hydration levels and keep your skin healthy.  Remember: Keep your humidifier in the room you sleep in!

Improving dehydrated skin is tricky – your skin may feel oily and dry at the same time, causing confusion about how to get back to a balanced state. This is because your skin is overproducing oils to compensate for the lack of moisture in the air.  When this occurs, it is important to use moisture-replenishing skincare products that contain ingredients such as niacinamide, squalene, and glycerin. Additionally, be sure to protect your skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays by applying an SPF daily.
